Molokai is known as “The Friendly Isle”, visitors are always greeted with a warm Aloha welcome. The Friendly Isle is the 5th largest island in Hawaii with an area of 608 square miles. Growth and development has been pleasingly slow, no traffic, no shopping malls and only “one” traffic light. Molokai has the highest populace of native Hawaiian ancestry, therefore rich in traditional Hawaiian lore and legend. Kalaupapa, located on the north shore is one of America’s earliest settlements for victims of Hansen’s disease (leprosy). Kalaupapa was established by the Hawaiian Monarchy in 1866. Father Damien de Veuster came to Kalaupapa in 1873 and spent the rest of his life establishing order. The beautiful lush Halawa Valley is located at the northern tip of Molokai; here two magnificent waterfalls will amaze you. Moaula Falls is 250’ high only to be dwarfed by the Hipuapua Falls at 500’. Another waterfall, considered the highest in the State of Hawaii, is the Kahiwa Falls, reaching 1,750’. The island also has the highest sea cliffs in the world, they encircle small plush valleys of Molokai’s east coast. The water reserve in Kualapu’u holds 1.4 billion gallons of water and is the largest of its kind in the world.

The island’s east cost is a dense wilderness, covered with green mountains, valleys, beautiful waterfalls and Hawaiian fish ponds. Molokai is twenty minutes by air from Maui or Oahu. Or, you can take the two hour trip by boat on the Molokai Ferry that originates at Maui’s Lahaina Town. Molokai is a quiet island, definitely a place for relaxation, exploration or just enjoying a good book.
