The island of Hawaii is the largest of the Hawaiian Islands, therefore referred to as the “Big Island.” This island has an area of over 4,028 square miles with 266 miles of coastline and is the second most populated island in the State. Geologically, it is the youngest island, formed by 5 volcanoes. The two that are still active are Mauna Loa and Kilauea. Kilauea is the world’s most active volcano on record with it’s on going eruption fascinating visitors since 1983. As Kilauea continues to add and reshape the island, it also influences the weather. As a result, the island experiences 11 of the 13 global climate zones. Mauna Loa at 13,677’ and Mauna Kea at 13,796’ are the highest mountains in the Pacific. Mauna Kea houses the world’s largest observatory with the biggest telescope and scientific observations. Ka Lae is the southernmost point in the United States with constant winds at 27 knots per hour that blow east to west 24 hours a day throughout the year.

The Big Island is diverse culturally and geographically from its snow capped peaks to lush rain forests and barren black lava fields. You will encounter a wide variety of plant, marine and animal life, including the Giant Pacific Green Sea Turtles and the Nene Goose. Visit the historic shores of Kealakekua Bay where Captain James Cook was killed in the late 1700’s and the 175,000 acre Parker Ranch, one of the oldest and largest cattle ranches in the United States.
