Lanai was known as the “Secluded Island” for 70 years. Today it is referred to as Hawaii’s most
“Secluded Island.” Lanai is the smallest and the least populated island in Hawaii. This is the 4th
youngest island, formed by a single shield volcano and is approximately 141 square miles in size with
47 miles of coastline. The “Secluded Island” is the only site in Hawaii from which 5 other islands can be viewed. The
island was purchased in the 1800’s by the Dole Family. It became the major producer for the Dole
Pineapple Company and home of the world’s largest pineapple plantations consisting of more than 16,000
acres. By 1993, the pineapple industry phased out. Today there are less than 100 acres of producing
pineapple fields. The charming plantation village of Lanai City is where most of the island
inhabitants reside.
Today Lanai focuses on the tourist industry, agriculture crops, ranching and resort development. It is a very exclusive and
remote island with two world renowned luxury resorts; Manele Bay Resort is located along the ocean on the west side of Lanai.
The Lodge at Koele is located in Lanai’s central highlands and is surrounded by Cook Island Pines. Two scenic world class golf
courses, one offers play along the ocean and the other in the cool central highlands. Hulope Bay is a marine preserve and considered
one of the best diving spots in the world. The islands playful dolphin population is a popular attraction for visitors the world
over. The “Secluded Island” offers privacy, elegance, relaxation, romance and adventure.
